This award recognizes Jack Webster and his legacy of insightful, accurate and uncompro-mising reporting from his more than 40 years of print, radio and television journalism.

Awards
Seven $2,000 awards are available and will be paid towards tuition at the recipient's school.


Eligibility
  • Students who are permanent residents of British Columbia (at least three years) and who are pursuing full time journalism studies in a British Columbia post-secondary journalism program and who show a demonstrated interest in journalism.
  • Eligible journalism programs: British Columbia Institute of Technology, Langara College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Thompson Rivers University, University of British Columbia. To be considered, a student must be attending the 2010 fall and 2011 spring terms.
  • One award will be given to a BC-born journalism student


  • What is a demonstrated interest in journalism?
    An eligible applicant is a student who is in a senior year in one of the above journalism programs and who preferably has practical or volunteer experience in the journalism field. A student may also be eligible if he or she holds a postsecondary degree and is in one of the above programs. Generally speaking, a student who has moved from high school into a journalism program will not be eligible until he or she has more experience.


    How do I apply?
    Complete the application form and send it to the Jack Webster Foundation along with your resume and a 500 word essay describing:
  • Your views on the place of journalism in the world we live.
  • Why you chose journalism as a career.
  • Your career goals.
  • Please send four copies of the application form, resume and essay.


    When will the recipients be announced?
    In mid-October.


    What are the benefits of the award?
    Each recipient will receive a $2,000 award paid directly to his or her post-secondary institution and will be invited to the Jack Webster Awards Dinner on November 1, 2010.


    Are reference letters required?
    No, reference letters are not required, only the name and contact information of two people from the journalism field who can confirm your interest in the pursuit of a journalism career.

    Q. On the application, you ask for my birthplace. Why?
    A. One award endowed by the Estate of Don Matheson, a former BC journalist, requires that the student selected be a BC-born student.
